About Us: The Hands Behind the Handbags

Gerry Gallagher founded Leather Surgeons in New York City in 1988 after studying at FIT and apprenticing under Domenic Rivierlo, a highly revered Italian artisan. Now, after nearly 30 years, Gerry is regarded as one of the last true master leather craftsmen in the United States who can turn an exotic alligator skin into a luxury handbag worth tens of thousands of dollars. Completing the Leather Surgeons team are Gerry’s sons, Cory and Hunter, who have been apprenticing under their father for the last ten years, becoming masters themselves. Leather Surgeons is a strong family business with a true passion for authentic craftsmanship.

Some of our experience includes:

  • Restorations and authentications on over 200,000 Chanel handbags
  • Restorations on ancient leather artifacts for the Museum of Natural History
  • Creation of custom handbags and handbag restorations for countless celebrities
  • Consultations for leading designer brands including handbags worth upwards of $250,000
  • Creation of custom leather training equipment for a US Olympic team in use at the US Olympic Training Center
