About Us

After studying at FIT and apprenticing under highly-revered artisan, Domenic Rivierlo, Gerry Gallagher founded Leather Surgeons in New York City in 1988. For nine years, he operated out of the city’s Fashion District on 32nd Street, right off of 5th Avenue.

Since then, the studio has moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia and Gerry has built quite a resume – some of which includes creating custom handbags for a number of celebrities, creating samples to launch up-and-coming designer brands such as Hayward Luxury, and creating and donating a handbag sold at a charity auction for over $15K – all while completing countless restorations along the way. Now after nearly 30 years, Gerry Gallagher is regarded as one of the last true leather craftsmen specializing in exotic skin restorations and intricate repairs that seem like magic.

Completing the Leather Surgeons team are Gerry’s sons, Cory and Hunter, who have been apprenticing under their father for the last 10 years, becoming masters themselves. Today, Leather Surgeons is both a boutique restoration studio and family business with a strong history and true passion for authentic craftsmanship.

A few of our most interesting projects include:

  • Repairs and authentications on over 200,000 Chanel handbags
  • Sample creation of the “Black Purse” clutch for surrealist painter and sculptor, Vladimir Kush
  • Restorations on ancient leather artifacts for the Museum of Natural History
  • Creation of custom training equipment for the US Olympic Training Center
